FOCUS Broadband Makes Service Available to First Phases in Chowan County
Chowan County, NC – FOCUS Broadband’s high-speed internet is now available in the first phases of a broadband project aimed at bringing faster internet to residents living in rural areas of Chowan County. Residents and businesses located along portions of Virgina Road from Hancock to Valhalla can now sign up for fiber optic internet service. Additional phases in Chowan County are expected to become available to order in the coming weeks.
“We are pleased to now offer high-speed internet to residents in Chowan County,” said FOCUS Broadband CEO Keith Holden. “Residents can now enjoy multi-gigabit internet speeds to stream content, work remotely, attend telehealth appointments, and more. We are excited to see the positive impacts this will have on many in these rural communities.”
Since 2021, FOCUS Broadband has worked with the Chowan County Government to identify areas in need of faster internet and to apply for broadband grants through the North Carolina Department of Information Technology’s Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) Grant Program. As a result of the partnership, FOCUS Broadband has been awarded two GREAT Grants totaling $7.2 million to bring high-speed internet to more than 2,400 addresses in the rural communities of Rockyhock, Mavaton, Valhalla, Cisco, Center Hill, Cannon Ferry, Welch, and Snow Hill.
Construction is currently underway in additional areas throughout Chowan County. To help construct this state-of-the-art 100% fiber optic network, FOCUS Broadband is working with Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation to deploy fiber optic lines on utility poles in certain areas of the county. In other parts of Chowan County, FOCUS Broadband will be installing underground fiber optic lines to serve residents.
Since 2019, FOCUS Broadband has secured more than $100 million in grant funding from both federal and state grant programs to expand multi-gigabit broadband internet service to more than 30,000 homes and businesses in Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus, Chowan, Duplin, Hoke, Pender, Perquimans, Robeson and Scotland counties.
