FOCUS Broadband Completes NCDIT GREAT Grant Project in Robeson County

Robeson County, NC – FOCUS Broadband has announced the completion of their project to bring fiber optic high-speed internet to more than 1,800 addresses near the rural communities of Parkton, Rex, and Lumber Bridge. This project was made possible through a $4 million North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) Grant awarded to the company in 2022. FOCUS Broadband and the Robeson County government also contributed a total of $886,300 in matching funds to help complete the project.

With the project completed, gigabit internet speeds are now available to residents in these rural communities, enhancing their ability to engage in telehealth services, work remotely, take online classes, and more.

“We’re proud to say we have completed our fourth grant-funded project in Robeson County and are closer to our goal of bringing high-speed internet to more rural residents and businesses in southeastern North Carolina,” said FOCUS Broadband CEO Keith Holden. “We are beyond grateful for the ongoing support of rural broadband from the NCDIT Division of Broadband and Digital Equity and from the Robeson County government and community leaders.”

Over the last four years, FOCUS Broadband has worked to bring fiber optic internet service to over 5,000 addresses throughout rural Robeson County. Last September, FOCUS Broadband completed work on a $2.9 million USDA-funded Community Connect Grant, making gigabit broadband internet service available to residents living in the Barker Ten Mile, Tolarsville, and Howellsville communities. In the spring of 2022, FOCUS Broadband also completed work on two previously awarded GREAT Grants, bringing faster internet service to residents and businesses living near Proctorville, Orrum, Marietta, Five Forks, and Fairmont.

FOCUS Broadband has recently started construction of a $24.6 million USDA ReConnect Grant project, which will extend high-speed internet to residents and businesses near Rowland, Raemon, Maxton, and areas along Singletary Church Road in Robeson County. The grant will also help FOCUS Broadband expand its fiber optic network to serve areas in Scotland County near Laurinburg, Wagram, and Deercroft.
